An Eye in Each Square explores the natural landscape and the modern world within an imaginative, poetic biography of enigmatic painter Agnes Martin.

With the gifts of a visual artist and poet’s attention, An Eye in Each Square confronts our era’s barbed and shifting networks of power and atrocities. Rendering its landscape in precise imagery and lyrical language, An Eye in Each Square asks the reader to hold the conscience of the world and also to claim what we might need most—the risky and urgent space of comfort found within the artist’s line.

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Diane Seuss says of the poems in this collection: “They move like the sea, mirror the stillness of the sky, mapping and refining a deep interiority.” Poet Cole Swenson writes: “These poems shine with the crystalline austerity of an Agnes Martin painting, sparkling with precise imagery, crisp word choices, and surprising swerves of syntax.”

Bullet Points traces a woman trial lawyer’s experiences of violence—from the intimate and domestic to the national—Sutherland brings a deeply perceptive tenderness to the reality of historical abuses grounded in law and capitalism. Drawing on acts of language and power, art and trauma, Bullet Points raises questions about the systems and structures that enable violence via a poetry brilliantly awake to this truth: “Language is one way of doing business across time and into spaces. Image is another.”

Poet Natalie Shapero offers this praise: “Bullet Points is relentless, harrowing, and tremendously smart. With uncommon acuity and force, Sutherland chronicles experiences of both public and intimate violence, writing back from trauma and toward something new and necessary. This book is an absolute accomplishment.”
